A Message from Mr. David in Upper Elementary
“Follow the child”, what does that mean? There are many misconceptions about Montessori education. “It is super loose and the kids get to do whatever they want”... “It's too regimented and the kids are dogged by structure!” Which is it? The only way to truly learn is to find out for yourself. To me, “follow the child” means, observe them, get to know them, learn what they love and what makes them tick, then I can gear my lessons and analogies to their specific interests. If you know the child, really know them, watch them from the time they are toddlers, you begin to learn their mode of operation. You know their challenges and where they excel. They are under my watchful eye for years and years. They do not go to another teacher when the bell rings or even at the end of the year. I am not saying that Montessori is perfect or even that it is right for everyone. I'm saying that we all have to, as I would say to a child, “Find out for yourself”. I invite anyone who is curious to come in and observe Upper Elementary.
